Assess the Pawn Ending

Black to move

Black exchanged rooks and went on to win. Was the rook exchange technically correct?

  1. The rook exchange should set off warning alarms because it leads to a pawn ending where White's king is more active, and Black has two weak backward pawns.

    1...Rxe2+ 2.Kxe2 Kf7 3.Ke3 Kg6 4.Kd4 Kg5 5.Kc5 Kh4 6.Kd6 Kxh3 7.Kxe6 Kxg4 8.Kd7 h5 9.e6 and Black is too slow.

    or 3...Ke7 4.Kd4 Kd7 5.Kc5 and the queenside falls.

  2. No, it is not correct.White plays c3 than if black plays b3 white is faster with king, and he will win Queenside
