Do U/XXXX sections encourage sandbagging? Will children deliberately lose so as to have a better chance of winning a trophy in an under 800 section at a state elementary tournament? Do adults manipulate their ratings at small local events in hopes of cashing in by playing in a lower section at a big money tournament?

There is no question that sandbagging takes place. I think it is much more common for adults to drop games leading into a tournament than kids. Kids usually do not think like that.
ReplyDeleteMy question is whether or not sandbagging helps. I think that it should not help very much because the people winning big prize sections are probably underrated to begin with. So you will still have to face players that are your strength or stronger in the later rounds if you play a lower section than your strength.
