In a game today, I played 24...Nd5 in a position that had been difficult for an hour.

    I think that 1: Nf7+ wins! If 1:., Kg8 2: Nh6+, Kg8 3: Rxg7 and mate next move...

      That's correct. White has a forced checkmate. Alas, White missed the mate and two moves later made another error, turning the game in Black's favor.
