Reinfeld Tactic

Black to move

Black wins material with a double attack, but not quite as much as claimed by Fred Reinfeld in 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations. I've listed this problem among my partial busts because Reinfeld's solution is flawed. Nevertheless, after the tactic, Black does get a winning advantage. At least my engine thinks so. Several moves into the position, however, I lost my way and my engine, playing White, built up a significant advantage.

For more on the training regimen that brought up this problem this morning, see "Where the Rubber Meets the Road," "Back to the Mines," and "Ninety Minutes."

  2. 1. ... Rxd4 2. Rxd4 Qe5 gains a piece since white has to defend mate on h2. With a piece more it must be easy to win the game i think, but offcourse one still has to play well.

  3. Chesstiger, That's Reinfeld's line, except after 3.Bf4, Black gains two minor pieces for the rook, while Reinfeld states that Black wins a rook.

  4. After 3. Bf4 black plays Qxf4 and gets two pieces for the rook. With other words, still an advantage for black.

  5. Agreed. Black gets an advantage. But, if I am ahead a rook (as Reinfeld claims), I can beat Hiarcs without too much trouble. When I am ahead two pieces for a rook, I usually lose to the engine.
